Who? EMC is a global leader in enabling businesses and service providers to transform their operations and deliver information technology as a service (ITaaS). EMC employs over 3,000 people in Ireland and celebrates 26 years in Cork this year.
What? EMC Ireland Centre of Excellence participated in three Engineers Week activities:
(1) Open Day at EMC Ireland Centre of Excellence
(2) Launch of Cork BT Young Scientist & Technology Display 2014 at Lifetime Lab
(3) ‘Meet The Engineers’ Family Open Day at Lifetime Lab
Where? EMC Ireland Centre of Excellence in Ovens and Lifetime Lab, Lee Road, Cork
When? 13th, 14th and 15th February 2014
Why? EMC believes in promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects to students and in showing them how engineering can be applied in a variety of careers. Giving back to our communities is an important part of what we do as a company. We have incredible power when we work together to make a difference.
Students from Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal, Blarney, visited EMC for the Open Day on Thursday, 13th February. We gave the students the Marshmallow Challenge which was great fun for the students as they learned to construct a structure in 20 minutes.
As part of Engineers Week EMC also supported two other events: –
On Friday 14th February, members of the EMC BT Young Scientist team attended the ‘Launch of Cork BT Young Scientist & Technology Display 2014’ at Lifetime Lab, Lee Road, Cork. The event hosted a display of prize-winning projects by Cork entrants to the 2014 BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition. The event was officially launched by Minister Sean Sherlock, TD.
The BT Exhibition is a great example of how we can inspire the next generation of young people to succeed in STEM-related careers. It is a platform that has helped launch careers, generate new businesses and create a forum for like-minded students to come together and build enduring friendships.
On Saturday 15th February, ‘Meet The Engineers’ Family Open Day was at Lifetime Lab and EMC supported this event by showcasing the VEX IQ Robotics Challenge. The VEX IQ robotics platform is designed to promote interest, at National School level, in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics).
The event itself was a huge success due to the interactive nature of the VEX IQ showcase. The full competition arena was set up for the day and multiple robots were available for kids to get a first look at this new and intuitive platform. The VEX program is a meaningful and fun way to encourage kids to engage in their exploration of STEM.
The support of the Lifetime Lab was wonderful and they certainly looked after our team well on the day. The enthusiasm and passion shown by the EMC volunteers was great and really contributed to an enjoyable and fun day for all our visitors.
We had a great response to all of our events, from volunteers, students and visitors. We would definitely recommend other companies get involved and we look forward to supporting Engineers Week again in the future.
