Case study: Engineers Week 2014 at WeCreate Workspace and Fab Lab

img_6169WeCreate Workspace and Fab Lab exists to provide access to the leading edge of digital fabrication tools and to provide education, business incubation and product development work related to these tools. WeCreate offers a unique technology and creative workspace offering access to digital manufacturing for Educators, Entrepreneurs, Designers and Makers.

During Engineers Week we coordinated:

Local Primary School Visits – Tuesday 11th February

Over 40 5th and 6th Class students from two local primary schools attended hands-on workshops. Working in teams under the direction of six volunteers using digital tools, the students were encouraged to develop their ideas and express their creativity through tasks based on integrating art, science and maths.

Living Building Challenge – Thursday 13th February

Eighteen attendees joined eight presenters to participate in nine unique tours led by architects, engineers and building owners in the Cloughjordan Ecovillage. The tours featured homes, commercial properties, district heating facilities, multi-family dwellings, hospitality units and infrastructure.

Open Day – Saturday 15th February

WeCreate held a free event for the local community to find out more about the future of manufacturing in our newly opened Fab Lab. Featuring 3D printing, interactive activities, tours of the workspaces and Coder Dojo, the Open Day was the perfect way to introduce our new business to the local community.

All events during Engineers Week took place at WeCreate, Ecovillage, Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary.

Highlights of Engineers Week 2014 at WeCreate

WeCreate was a hive of activity during Engineers Week 2014. Over ten volunteers joined company founders Ben Whelan and Anthony Kelly for a week of lively events introducing the Fab Lab to local schools, businesses and communities. With highlights including our Open Day at the WeCreate Workspace and Fab Lab and our first ever schools visits, the week was a great success for all involved.

img_6205Proceedings kicked off with our very first Primary School visit to the WeCreate Workspace and Fab Lab. Fifth and Sixth class students from St. Michael’s National School and Cloughjordan No. 1 National School participated in hands-on workshops featuring Coder Dojo on the Rasberry Pi, laser cutter and vinyl cutter demonstrations, and renewable energy learning sessions.

The students very much enjoyed their visits and they all got to take home their very own key rings personalised on the laser cutter!

The Living Building Challenge followed with over 25 participants from all over Ireland joining Nellie Reid, from the Living Building Challenge Ireland, for an inspiring day touring the green facilities of the Cloughjordan Ecovillage. Attendees included architects, engineers, planners, and graduate students. The tour presenters were architects and engineers living and/or working in the Ecovillage.

We finished the week with our special Open Day, when over 150 people from all over Ireland came to tour the workspace and find out more about Ireland’s newest Fab Lab. The sun shone throughout the day as interested visitors of all ages watched machine demonstrations, talked to the project organisers and generally soaked up the atmosphere.

Our hard-working volunteers spent the day demonstrating just how the project plans to make waves across Ireland in the new digital manufacturing revolution.
