Who? KH Chartered Consulting is a Civil Engineering Consultancy specialising in Highways and Traffic Engineering.
What? Arranged site visits for primary school children to learn what an engineer’s typical day involves. Transition Year (TY) students got a detailed insight into various engineering career options, and explanations as to how engineers provide many day-to-day facilities we take for granted.
When? 9th February for airport site visit and career workshops on 11th and 12th February
Why? To give students an insight into engineering and show them the many different teams behind the scenes that make a large engineering operation run smoothly. To show that engineering is not just “for boys who love construction” and that many girls can make a highly valued contribution across many other engineering sectors.
To explain to students that they can choose to study and work in engineering locally as well as abroad using KH Chartered Consulting and others as case studies during TY engineering career workshops.
City of Derry Airport site visit: Staff from the Airport’s Fire Rescue team and Air Traffic Control team explained how they contribute towards the smooth running of the airport. The Fire Rescue team carried out a trial emergency procedure and the Air Traffic Control Team brought us to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower as a plane was landing. The students were excited to see the fire engines and to experience being in the ATC tower.
Many students said that they would now be able to show their parents where the Air Traffic Engineer sits and how he/she talks to the pilot to help land the plane.
Transition Year students from local schools attended two workshops in conjunction with KH Chartered Consulting with other companies from across the Donegal Region explained how engineers affect our daily lives and gave an insight into an engineers typical day.
The students made some valid arguments in relation to local opportunities and gender difference – and they were informed about the range of companies on show and the mix of exhibitors on each day.
