Case study: Engineers Week 2017 at St Patrick’s NS, Stamullen, Co Meath

Fact file

Who? 680 pupils altogether, from Junior Infants to 6th class, mixed. 24 mainstream teachers. St Patricks 17

What? Each class undertook to complete at least one, if not several, engineering activities, throughout the course of the week. Student Council members made daily announcements about activities being carried out and shared interesting information about engineers’ work. Please see attached poster.

Where? Mainly in classrooms, but some activities migrated out into the corridor / the PE hall / yard. Interested pupils got involved by completing projects at home.

When? March 6th – 10th, 2017. However, work has continued and teachers are building on the skills developed before and during Engineers’ Week. Ms Griffin’s 6th class project is still on-going, because it is integrated with Development Aid Education in SESE Geography.

Why? To stimulate thought and observation that is scientific in nature eg Asking questions about why aspects of environment work as they do. To promote engineering, not only as a career choice, but as an on-going occupation in life – to normalise creating solutions to problems encountered.
