To celebrate Engineers Week John Sisk and Son invited local students and their teachers to attend an informative site visit at their premises, Wilton One.
Speaking on their experience Frances Ruan from CUS, Catholic University School, Leeson Street told Engineers Ireland that – the students and teachers were completely amazed by the professional and informative presentation. Sisk Engineers, Quantity Surveyors and Site Managers gave a presentation fitting for a huge bidding tender. The boys saw the whole network of collaboration involved and got great insight into how a contract job works from signing contracts to signing off on the job.
The role of the most advanced technology used by Sisk was demonstrated throughout the presentation. The walk onto the site then brought together the practical side of the job and demonstrated the importance of safety.
This visit and others like it, which ought to be happening, teaches more than any school classroom could, about a range of topics relating to the world of work. As well as the obvious value in understanding the careers involved as epitomized by Brian Comaskey and his team, there is huge real time learning in the areas of communication, technology, health and safety, networking and collaboration. The opportunities for career advancement, gaining professional qualifications and potential to develop from apprentice to qualified manager or engineer were demonstrated by members of the presenting team.
All agree this was a great and very valuable experience.
Our visit on Nov 7th to Sisk Construction at their Wilton One site was fantastic. The day started off with a presentation from the contracts manager, site manager and engineers. It was a fantastic presentation and the showed us all the work that was being completed on the software BIM. They also showed us all the work that had been completed up to now on a timelapse. Following on from the presentation we then went out on the site which was in the demolition phase. We went up onto the fourth floor and had a great view of the site. Here we could see all the work they were talking about in the presentation in action. We then got an opportunity to speak to the lads who gave us the presentation about careers in the construction industry from apprenticeships to engineering. It really was a fantastic trip and one from which I learned a huge amount.
