It is widely recognised that the ‘Space Race’ between the Soviet Union and the USA had an enormous impact on military scientific and engineering development from the second half of the 20th century onwards. But what is not so well known is that this ‘Cold War’ competition between the Superpowers spawned an upsurge of interest in science fiction amongst children and teenagers particularly in the 1960s that was reflected in toys, comics, music, television and cinema which ultimately led to this youth generation inventing many of the technologies and devices that we use today.
