WAVES – DIT

Women in Engineering Role Model Day, organised by WAVES (Women – A Voice in Engineering Society), took place at DIT Kevin Street on the Wednesday of Engineers Week. A very well attended event, with speakers including Carole Smilie, Bennett Construction; Kirsten Foy, consultant; Caitriona Lambert, South Dublin County Council; Aoife Delaney, DIT; Muireann Ryan, DIT; and Norah Patten, UL. Cold Chon Galway and Road Maintenance Services

Thirty secondary school students form Summer Hill College Sligo and their teacher, Mr. Niall McDermott, were invited by Cold Chon Galway and Road Maintenance Services Ltd to an event titled 'The Science behind Roads'. Presentations and discussions were provided by Liam Henry and Tom Walsh on all activities related to civil/mechanical and chemical engineering. The day was a great success with the students. Abbott – Sligo

Engineers Week events took place on Tuesday and Thursday. Each day two engineers from Abbott’s diagnostics manufacturing site in Sligo visited two local schools. During the visits engineers gave a presentation to give an insight into the role of an engineer at Abbott. Students asked interesting questions and were very involved in the discussions. An engineering quiz was also held followed by an engineering activity (building a water pump). Schools visited were: Coola Post-Primary School, St. Edwards NS, Scoil Naomh Maolise, and Cliffoney NS. Abbott Nutrition – Cavan

Three volunteers from Abbott Nutrition visited 6th class students in St Michael's primary school in Cootehill, Cavan. The engineers gave an overview of engineering, and the students took part in a filtration experiment and a bridge-building activity. Ennistymon Vocational School – Clare

Ennistymon Vocational School, joint winner of the Engineers Week schools prize, organised a variety of engineering and maths events, including classroom experiments and workshops, a treasure hunt, a quiz, a mini careers expo and ‘mousetrap racing’. Family Fun Day at Engineers Ireland - Dublin

An action-packed morning of events took place on the Saturday of Engineers Week at Engineers Ireland’s HQ in Ballsbridge, Dublin. Events included Engineering in Action, a showcase of cutting edge engineering applications from UCD and DIT research labs; Technology Rocks, an entertaining show for children by ‘Scientific Sue’, seen here in rehearsal; ‘Parachutes Away’, a workshop run by Engineers without Borders; and a series of Open University talks, including a demonstration of the ‘extrusion’ of chocolate by Dr Ian Johnston.  Engineers in the City – Dublin

Description: Primary school children from Dublin 7 were the first to enjoy the new ‘Engineers in the City’ walking trail, accompanied by volunteer engineer Donal Brennan from Dublin City Council. North West Region Charity Collection

Mechanical and Civil Engineering students at IT Sligo's School of Engineering and Design raised EUR1350.50 for their local Northwest Hospice in a charity collection during Engineers Week. The money was collected at several locations throughout Sligo town and within the Institute of Technology. [Engineers Week 2013]

Engineer visit to Urbleshanny School – Monaghan

Teacher Elaine Lavelle said: “A local engineer gave a fantastic presentation to 5th and 6th class pupils all about the work of engineers and his own field of excellence. The pupils were then given a task to complete. The task was to build a table from paper and card. Obviously some found their paper tables unsteady and, just as engineers do, they tried to solve the problems encountered by inserting supports and fine-rolling their tubes of paper. The pupils had an excellent day.” [Engineers Week 2013]

Mitsubishi Electric Ireland – visit to Tallaght Community School

Mitsubishi Electric Ireland visited the Transition Year students of Tallaght Community School. Students enjoyed a presentation on manufacturing in Ireland and a discussion of the reasons why Ireland needs engineers. Students were also shown videos of manufacturing processes within Mitsubishi Electric. Following this, Mitsubishi Electric performed a robotics demonstration of one a multi-axis articulated arm robot. A few students were given the opportunity to manually operate and programme the robotic arm. [Engineers Week 2013]

Farrans Construction - Belfast

Throughout Engineers Week three graduate civil engineers and one placement student took part in engineering events in five schools in Belfast, including a presentation about engineering and the opportunities available, and a team game which required pupils to work in groups and create towers out of marshmallows and spaghetti sticks. The different routes to becoming an engineer were also discussed. [Engineers Week 2013]

Eli Lilly – Kinsale Community School

An onsite session at Eli Lilly was organised as part of Engineers Week 2013, with a visit from a local school, Kinsale Community School. Students enjoyed presentations, videos, a poster presentation and a design game in a site Conference Room, as well as a site tour of Eli Lilly Kinsale. [Engineers Week 2013]
